The Boys of Summer: Ryan Leslie

Monday, July 28th, 2008 | by J. Baker

I admit. It took me a LONG time to admit that I liked Ryan Leslie. Anyone responsible for Cassie had to be gahbaaage in my book, but Mr. “1600 on his SAT’s” has made me a fan since I saw him live had after a brief conversation with him after the show—i’m officially now a supporter. The boy has got moxie and an army of sunglasses and slim pants to prove it! For this addition of the Boys Of Summer, may we present, Ryan Leslie!

…And just like that. We are back!

See that house? That is life. See those tights and shoes. That is us. Yes, we decided that it was time for some serious back-end housecleaning so we chose the week that basically we all went out of town to do it. Little did we know that the house would literally FALL on our ass. So ANYWAYS! Next week its all about Ryan Leslie for our next installment of the Boys of Summer, plus some other goodies we cooked up for you while we were away. Until then!!!

Kanye’s New Louis Vuitton

Do we like Kanye’s custom-made Louis Vuitton backpack ladies? I mean, considering he’s always going to rock one…do we condone? I’m good until he gets one in monogramoflauge…On second thought, that might be fresh. **copyrighting that idea**

Here are a few flicks from Sunday’s sauna concert in NYC’s Central Park. Suffice to say it was hotter than Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway during West Indian Day Parade. FIYAAAHHHH!!! Check it out!  Diplo’s dancers (above) were…creative. (more…)

John Legend: Boogying in Brooklyn

John Legend Is Not Playing...

It takes a man with balls to wear white pants and John Legend definitely has some. On Monday night (July 21), our favorite piano man performed at Brooklyn’s Wingate Field to kick off the 26th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series (which will later feature the likes of Jill Scott and Erykah Badu). As usual, he did not disappoint.

Opening the show was Johnnie’s brother Vaughn Anthony, who doubles as his backup singer and whose voice sounds so eerily similar to JL’s that if you closed your eyes you could instead imagine John belting out lyrics like, “We’re humping… we’re humping…” Next, Estelle, the UK singer-rapper-firecracker warmed up the crowd with songs from her debut, Shine, including “Come Over,” “No Substitute Love,” “More Than Friends” (a personal favorite) and a not-so-good sped-up rendition of “Shine.” She’s a sassy one. The crowd dug her take-charge attitude—she said “bitches” a couple times and twice beckoned a band member to dance with her then playfully pushed him away once done. (more…)

Women + Men = Confusion

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 | by Parlour Fam

I swear, I am baffled as to how any two people of the opposite sex ever meet and fall in love. Women and men are on totally different pages about so many things.

Case in point:

TLA doesn’t get why I’m into him. I tell him at least once a day that he’s amazing and it’s always because he’s done something well… amazing. And it doesn’t have to be anything “big.

Here’s an overview of what he does:

The man picks me up on time whenever I arrive in DC. He meets me in the station so I don’t have to carry my big bag. He goes to the grocery store to get me veggie food (none of his meals are complete without meat) and cooks it. He frequently makes me breakfast (and dinner) and when necessary will painstakingly pick the meat out of my dish. He randomly tells me I’m “lovely” when I walk in or around a room. He walks around BK with his arm around my shoulder just so. He stares at skylines with me. He opens all doors. He calls almost every morning to wish me a wonderful and/or God-blessed day. Everytime I call him, he answers or calls me right back. He remembers everything I say. He keeps his word. He’s reliable and consistent. All of this, and yet he doesn’t understand why I think he’s amazing? (more…)
