PLR Review: Carla Bruni- Model, Singer…France’s First Lady?

Carla Bruni, wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, is not your typical first lady. An accomplished model and singer, she has fast become the darling of not only her country but the world, and is even being compared to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Grace Kelly. Despite her role as First Lady of France, Bruni doesn’t mince words with the release of her third album, Comme Si Rien N’Etait (As If Nothing has Happened). .
In the song “Ta Tienne (Yours),” Bruni speaks to a man, presumable Bruni, as she sings “I, who used to make men dance, I give my whole self to you”. Bruni’s sultry and breathy vocals keep you listening as she relates the intimate details of her life with her trademarked openness. It plays like an open book as she tells of former lovers in “L’Amoureuse” or confesses that her love for her man is akin to an drug addiction in a track titled “Tu Es Ma Came (You are my smack).” Bruni is also an accomplished songwriter, penning 11 of the 14 tracks on the album.

The first lady scores with a solidly produced, classically French album offering an entertaining rarely seen peak into the private life of a world leader. While there is only one English track, “You belong to Me,” knowing French is hardly a perquisite for enjoying the album. It’s refreshing to see France’s first lady,  a traditionally conservative role, have the courage to speak her truth without fear of critics.

Now that she has the world’s attention, it’s hard to imagine that anyone will be able to act as if nothing ever happened.

Brunis Comme Si Rien N’Etait is in-stores now and she’s also in NYC for the UN summit…NYMag is stalking her- right now.
