Sex Drive—That’s My Number

Friday, January 30th, 2009 | by Bobbi

tallyWhen I was 18, I made my first visit to the gynecologist. I had just started sleeping with an older man, whom I met at the bar where I worked. I said to myself, “If you’re going to have sex with a grown-up, you should be a grown-up and go to the gyno.”
.
Along with incriminating questions like, “Do you smoke marijuana?” the form that I had to fill out also asked me, how many sexual partners I’d had.

“Do they really need to know that?” I thought, along with, “Is my nurse going to tell my advisor that I puff the La?”

I cringed as I sketched in the number “3.” I felt like a slut, half of my friends in college were virgins and the other half had just lost their Vs to their high school sweethearts. (more…)

A Cruel Twist of Fate?

Friday, January 30th, 2009 | by French Kissed

With only two weeks left in France…I met a guy. And not just any guy…but one I really like, right as I sat contemplating “Something New. “…Mali walked into my world.

One week ago, I was sitting at the bar with Alexis and Sydney when he entered and I was instantly attracted to him. I mentioned it to Alexis and she called him over. We talked the entire night. We have been hanging out almost every day since. Long walks on the canals…French movies…late night dinners…and, yes, lots of kissing. He calls me “Ma Chérie” and signs his text messages with “kisses.” He’s attentive and so far not afraid to share how he feels.

As for the something new part he is what the French would call “métis”…mixed. (more…)

Hopefully they asked her why this album isn’t the biz- even though I gave it another chance while packing this weekend and I didn’t hurl myself out of the window so that’s a plus no?

WATCH IT!: “Medicine For Melancholy”

Friday, January 30th, 2009 | by Steely D

Did I tell you guys about an awesome movie called Medicine For Melancholy? I saw it around October of last year and it’s a written and directed by first time director named Barry Jenkins. The story follows two people who share a one night stand and try to figure out who each other actually is during the next 24 hours. It’s a black movie without all of the silliness and condescending that usually goes down during Hollywood “black” films.

Medicine for Melancholy opens at IFC in NYC this weekend. SUPPORT! Why? Because it’s really good- and I’m a hater so that means alot. Lol… + actor/ director talking about their roles after the jump. =0)

Thx for the reminder GAK! (more…)

“The L Word” Final Season? Yawn

Friday, January 30th, 2009 | by J. Baker

So I know that I was super late on the lives of my favorite WeHo (west hollywood- I had to think about it too- Steely) girls on Showtime, but after watching all five seasons of The L Word in six straight days, I was finally caught up for the sixth and final season’s debut. My verdict so far?

ZZZZZZ.

I know we are only on the second episode but am I wrong to think that this season will be a complete snore? We ALL know that Alice and Tasha are like so not that great together (I wanted to slap the crap out of Alice during the therapy session), and that Jenny is stuck in “victim” mode which makes us all hate her, but the best was learning that Max was preggers! (whoa! spoiler alert!- Steels hasn’t watched this one yet…) (more…)
