Ted Haggard on “Oprah”: I’m Not Gay…I’ve Just Had Gay Relationships

See, this is what happens when you have a day job- You miss stuff like this. Catching up on “Oprah” last night, I found Ted Haggard, a minister who had the meth scandal a few years ago, saying he’s trying his best to “pray away” his homosexuality.

I’m torn about this.

Firstly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being gay. Secondly, I don’t think you can pray away your sexual tendencies. Thirdly, I grew up in a church where a gentleman did “pray away” his sexuality, but he was STILL gay. So, albeit this is one case, I’d have to say that if society was primarily homosexual and, with me being a heterosexual, I don’t think I could pray away my own sexual tendencies. My belief, of course, aligns with the belief that most gay people are born homosexual rather than adopt the practice through socialization. This is all just my opinion- but it’s an interesting thing, this “praying away” things…In addition, I must say that I believe in the power of prayer as well. But to me, “praying away” homosexuality is like “praying away” brown eyes and then we’re crossing over in Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” territory and everything really gets weird.

What do you think?

I think the whole “praying away” thing is an act of self-denial. You are who you are and there’s only but so much you can change about yourself.

  • but if you subscribe to the being gay is a choice school of thought then praying it away would be in line with praying away your urge to smoke, do drugs, etc..

then again even if you believe you are born gay and are a devout christian (or whatever religion) you might think it’s the same as battling against your inherent sinful nature.. know what i mean? ie. john doe is born with a tendency toward lying so he prays not to lie

i don’t know.. i try to see all sides but i’m not gay so maybe i don’t know what i’m talking about..just my 2 cents

    he is gay. point blank.
yet he really wants to live his life as “pastor ted”.
he is not praying away his homosexuality (that is not real.), he is praying FOR his life to remain the same because it is what he knows. he is afraid, and when we are afraid…we say crazy things….and if we have a good publicist…we say them on oprah.
