The Complete Inauguration Event List + Run-Down

martin-and-obama

I assume a lot of you are going to DC for Inauguration, right??

I got an email bright and early Sunday morning (7AM) from a reader who was like:

‘Um, Amelda? What’s going in DC next weekend? I have a bunch of flyers, but I’m from out of out of town and I don’t know what’s hot as I’m not from there!!!’

So I’ve come up with a quick list if you’re looking for young Black professionals to party with in DC.

But first, a bit of insight about DC partying:

*DC is known for politics, but these folks get it in when it comes to clothes and partying (a very good male friend has a walk-in closet for his fashion.) A random night with no major city-wide events and you’ll see dudes in suits or cashmere sweaters at the club. DC ladies wear heels like Muslim ladies where veils. I say that to say: pack with your A game in mind. Every event worth attending is calling for a formal or black tie dress code so expect to see cocktail dresses and suits and likely some gowns and tuxes. I’m warning you to come correct.

*DC runs its clubs like they are professional corporations (it’s the rub-off from being a political city.) Hook ups at the door are hard to come by without a strong connect even during non-citywide events. Usually I can finagle something, but for Inauguration, I had to work like the rent was due to get in most of the events. If you’re not a blood relative of the person on the door, don’t bother trying for the hook up. Just pay IN ADVANCE and take your receipt with you.

*I jokingly refer to DC as the bourgiest place on earth. People will give you the name of the elected official or government agency they work for, their major and the university they graduated from before they give you their name. Oh, and don’t be offended or surprised if someone asks you in the first 30 seconds of conversation, “where did you get your master’s from?” Of the Black locals you’ll meet at Inauguration, half went to law school, another quarter got MBAs and work in politics (ie. law) and the remainder are in school or prepping to go back. DC believes in the highest of higher education. If you’re an artistic type, don’t be offended if you’re summarily dismissed upon answering, “what do you do?” Most of the city is filled with type A’s who just don’t understand doing anything creative as a profession.

*Every party this weekend is being called an Inaugural Ball or Gala whether it’s official or not. Don’t be fooled by the titles if you’re looking for an Obama- sighting or to rub elbows with members of Congress.

*The train’s do not run 24 hours, New Yorkers. Nor are cabs readily available, even for white people. Do not get stuck in East Neverland without transportation. You will likely end up walking to your hotel…in the cold.

*Speaking of cold: Um, DC gets cold. Really cold. I think the high a couple of days next weekend is in the 20s and dips to the teens at night. Now I know you wanna be cute, but ladies, put on leggings under your mini-dress. Take em off in the bathroom and put em in coatcheck. And if you’re standing out on the mall for Inauguration, bundle up and go read online about the long list of things you can’t take to the festivities.

*DC is a southern city of sorts (DMVers have a twang) but southern-ish and small city does not mean slow or stupid. And even though most folk will speak in the street, this town can get very grimey. Use common sense.

*DC has one of the highest HIV rates in the country. Have fun, but WRAP IT UP!!!

*You need a GPS if you’re driving. DC is notoriously hard to figure out and it was made that way intentionally (do your research on why.) Don’t rely on a map or memory to get you to point B or back to A. You will get lost.

Now for the parties (Don’t say Amelda never gave you anything 😉

Amelda, thanks for schoolin’ the masses on partuing in our little city. Ladies, DC is no joke when it comes to dress codes, no premium/special edition/super limited sneaker game will be respected. Too bad I will be hustling in NYC (tear). Have fun!
Also peeps, please don’t attempt to park on the street…they just changed a bunch of street regulations downtime, so just go in on a garage!!!

  • kenrya

Seriously, don’t even drive into the city if you can help it. They are shutting down several main roads in from Maryland and Virgina on Monday night, and it is advised that you stay right in the city if you’re going to the actual inauguration or parade on Tuesday. The MARC train is sold out for the day off, and the bridge from VA is a wrap.

  • kenrya

It’s crazy. As long as I’ve been out of DC, all these crews that are throwing these parties are def still my peoples from HU. Some things never change! Have fun folks.

  • amelda

K: I’ve been out of college almost a decade and YES!!! I had the same thought! Between the folks i went to school with throwing events and the NY PR folks handling the press for the major stuff, I knew someone at almost everything. .(Still didn’t stop me from having to work like a dog to get in.)

I’m so giddy for DC. I’m like a kid waiting for Christmas!!

  • 🙁 I’ll have my kids with me so it’s a no go on all these fun events. I’ll have to wait for your posts and party vicariously through parlourmag. Don’t let me down ladies!

  • krankin

We got you, alysimone. Updates next week!

Amelda: I know! Can’t wait to get down there—not looking forward to the actual traveling part, though, smh.
