India International Women Day

Yesterday, the world celebrated International Women’s Day.  This year’s focus: “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls.” Jezebel posted images from around the world–India, Lebanon, Greece… but right here in the U.S. a 15 year old girl is getting her a** kicked in Seattle Washington by the very forces meant to protect us (see below)  {Jezebel}

Caught on Tape.  Two Sheriff Deputies in Seattle Washington videotaped attacking a 15 year old girl in a jail cell.  There is no excuse for this level of violence.  {CBS News via YouTube}

It all starts now:  The White House has moved to ease some travel and trade restrictions as a cautious first step towards better ties with Cuba, raising hopes of an eventual lifting of the four-decade-old economic embargo. Several Bush-era controls are expected to be relaxed in the run-up to next month’s Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago. {The Guardian}

Webster Hall just finished $3 million renovation.  Now, can they bring in the crowds to get their return of investment?  The NY Times examines the club’s history… from club kids to metal bands.  Now that we’re in the middle of a recession,  who will provide their main source of income?  {New York Times}
