It’s a fact: women outnumber men in this country. And when you consider the number of men who are afraid of monogamy, live with their mothers, or have children with multiple women…well, it’s not looking good. With so much competition out there, long gone are the days when a woman could sit idly by and wait for a man to come along and sweep her off her feet. Oh no, it’s a new day, girls! If you want to sack a good guy, you’re going to have to get off the bench and get into the game.
It’s all about where the boys are. They’re not in your pilates class or in your girl friend’s living room. Getting out of your comfort zone is a must; you’ve met all the guys in your comfort zone and you’re still single. Get thee to a sports bar, and mingle! If you want to meet someone new, you’ve got to go someplace new. Go to a whiskey (or other macho liquor) tasting, check out a gallery opening, or take a photography class. The do-it-yourself classes at Home Depot and Lowe’s are also full of (potentially handy) men. You’ll have a bit of fun, learn something new, and you might even meet someone special.
When you’re out with the girls, don’t huddle in the girl-pack. There’s nothing more intimidating to a guy than a pack of women all giving him the once-over. Don’t let your girls get in the way. Separate yourself from the crew, at least long enough to scope out the place and decide if you need to leave yourself open. A guy who would never approach the pack might jump at the chance to talk to you while you’re sipping your cosmo alone at the bar. And you can tell your girls all about it after you’ve given him your phone number.
Don’t be afraid to make the first move. Desperation is a turn-off, but most men find it refreshing when a woman eliminates the guesswork. If you’re interested in a guy, send him a signal. It doesn’t take much; even lingering eye contact can do the trick. If a guy knows you won’t shoot him down, he’s more likely to make a move. If you’re feeling bold, strike up a conversation with the object of your desire. You could even buy him a drink and scribble your number on the cocktail napkin. What’s the worst that could happen?
Always have your game face on. You never know when or where you might meet a gentleman of interest. Try to avoid leaving the house with rollers in your hair or while wearing pajama pants. You could meet your future husband in the freezer aisle, but not if the frozen fish sticks looks sexier than you do. You can’t be perfectly coiffed at all times, but you can make minimal effort. Some cover-up and a little mascara never hurt anyone, and it might even get you a date.
Don’t write off singles events or dating websites. I hear single women say all the time that they’re not desperate enough to try speed dating or Match.com. But why wait until desperation sets in? While you’re sitting at home alone, love is blooming between couples that met by being open to all of the above. If you have yet to meet Mr. Right, let go of your silly hang-ups, create an online profile, and make an appearance at the next singles event in your city. Don’t knock it ’til you try it.
Okay gals, get busy…you’ve got work to do!
