Depending on how old you are, the name Anita Hill is an instant reminder of the scandal of the early 90’s, when now Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was investigated for sexual harassment, causing him to almost lose his place on the bench before he even started. The image of Ms. Hill, testifying before a Senate panel in her green dress in many ways signifies the beginning of corporate sexual harassment policies across the country, bringing the issue to the public’s attention arguably for the first time.
Which is why I want to choke Clarence’s wife, Virginia. According to CNN, Virginia Thomas had the nerve to call Anita almost twenty years later to ask for an apology for the commotion. No really. She did:
“I certainly thought the call was inappropriate,” Hill said in a statement to CNN issued by Brandeis. “I have no intention of apologizing because I testified truthfully about my experience and I stand by that testimony.”In a statement to CNN, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas said: “I did place a call to Ms. Hill at her office extending an olive branch to her after all these years, in hopes that we could ultimately get passed what happened so long ago. That offer still stands, I would be very happy to meet and talk with her if she would be willing to do the same. Certainly no offense was ever intended.”
According to a source at Brandeis, who spoke on condition of not being identified, the message left over the weekend said:
“Good morning, Anita Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas. I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology some time and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. OK, have a good day.”
Clarence “Coke Can” Thomas. Please tell your wife Virginia to chill out, especially since she’s already being thrown a bucket of glances due to her lobbying activities, clearly a conflict of interest since you are a judge. For Anita to apologize would not only discredit her as a professional, it would also discredit the millions of women who have filed sexual harassment claims since 1991, making the already difficult process even more terrifying. Of course Clarence is no where to be found and has not issued a statement, and why would he? He’s known for just taking up space. Clearly we stand with Anita on this one, and even though she can’t say it we will: hell no.
