I caught up with Curren$y Spitta, born Mr. Shante Franklin, this week about the many albums he’s releasing this year — including Covert Coup with Alchemist, Muscle Car Chronicles and Pilot Talk III — and a new project with a certain Cool Kid. Spitta even weighed in (kinda) on bestie Wiz Khalifa’s new girlfriend Amber Rose and finding his groove as a hair stylist. Jet Life.
PARLOUR: Are you still signed to Damon Dash’s Roc-A-Fella label now that you’ve joined Warner Music Group?
Curren$y: No, Dame’s my homeboy. The upcoming Muscle Car Chronicles album is Dame’s project but Covert Coup, Weekend At Burnie’s, Verde Terrace, a mixtape with DJ Drama, and the series that I’m going to do with Chuck Inglish aren’t.
Chuck Inglish, of The Cool Kids?
He’s producing a project for me called Puff Daddy, a play on words … It was Diddy approved. We talked to him at SXSW and that will definitely come through the Warner Brothers umbrella as well. So you knew before I told [Warner executive] Todd Moscowitz, it’s a fucking exclusive!
Will Puff Daddy be a mixtape or a duet album through Warner?
It’s a mixtape but I want to pick up some bread for it. It’ll be all original songs through Warner and Jet Life Records.
And you’re shooting a clip for my favorite Pilot Talk II song, “Famous”?
Yes, the video for “Famous” will be shot before Covert Coup comes out on April 20. The director is my guy Jonah Schwartz, he’s awesome.
