DJ Kalkutta’s ‘Boy Talk’: THROWBACK!

It’s time for July’s Throwback and this month we checked in with the lovely DJ Kalkutta. I originally met the petite spinner during Fashion’s Night Out last year where she was keeping the party going at New York’s Betsey Johnson boutique. I was a fan, of Kalkutta’s tunes and the champagne the sales associate plied me with to convince me to my trade my cash for some bag that lovingly didn’t match itself.

So who is Kalkutta? Check out her steez below and listen to her “Boy Talk” mix!

PARLOUR: Born and raised?

DJ Kalkutta: I was born in Calcutta (Kolkata), India and lived in an orphanage there until I was adopted by an American woman who lives in the midwest! Moved to New York as soon as I graduated high school and now I kinda feel like I was raised here in a way! Lol!

How did you start spinning?

I pretty much came out of the womb doing it. Oh wait, I went to school for Audio Engineering and Music Production and picked up deejaying as a way to get out of all the crappy jobs I was doing to survive. I’ve been fired from no less than 15 restaurants in New York. Little did I know I would fall in love with Deejaying!

Favorite song to play at the height of the party?

Well, this is always changing with the Top 40 but I have an electro remix of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” that hits pretty hard. If you don’t love drunkenly singing your heart out to this song at 2 in the morning, you probably have no soul.

What did you want to be when you were little?

Exactly what I grew up to be, a fucking rockstar.

Who are your DJ idols?

First and foremost, my mentor Mel Debarge, as well as NY-based DJ’s Kiss and M.O.S. I’m also a huge Mark Ronson fan!

Who is the most interesting person in the world?

Steve Jobs is up there, so is J.K. Rowling. I think artists like Imogen Heap and Daft Punk who don’t do that much press are always intriguing. Ugh, this question is too tough. Let’s just say Justin Bieber and call it a day.

What’s your favorite country to visit outside of America?

I haven’t done nearly as much international travel as I intend to, but so far I’m pretty fond of Italy!

What’s your favorite saying?

Oh man, I’m pretty famous for my ‘kutta-isms’ so it’s hard to pick just one. Probably just gonna have to quote Snoop Dogg here and say “Deez nutz.”

What piece of clothing do you wear everyday, barring undies?

Who says I wear underwear everyday?

What’s the last thing you bought to wear?

A Spice Girls pin from some vintage Rock & Roll apparel store in Portland. I also got a Blondie pin there and another pin that says “More is More.” Pins are cool again, or at least I’m trying to make them anyway.

Favorite guilty pleasure?

I’m assuming you mean legal guilty pleasure here, so really lame TV shows. Like “Cougartown” and “The Secret Life of an American Teenager.” I literally have the worst taste in TV ever. Thank god I don’t actually own a television and watch all this stuff on Hulu.

Favorite movie?

It’s a toss up between Girl, Interrupted and Catch Me If You Can.

Five favorite songs?

Hardest question ever for a DJ. OK, here’s a list, subject to change:

Kanye West’s “I Wonder”
M.I.A.’s “Sunshowers”
Frank Ocean’s “Swim Good”
Amy Winehouse’s “You Sent Me Flying”
Daft Punk’s “Aerodynamic”

What’s your definition of a good day?

Making a lot of money.
