As a member of the indie hip-hop group Tanya Morgan, Donwill is a mainstay in Brooklyn’s social scene. I’d seen him around but it was our conversation about Odd Future’s rape-kill-joy lyrics that really made me like him. “I’m a 30 year-old, grown ass man, dog. That shit is not for me,” Don said bluntly at an art show on Fulton Avenue. iDie. Today, the bespectacled MC blessed us with a mix called Don Dubs, listen below, and make sure you look out for Tanya Morgan’s aptly-titled next project You And What Army!? on November 22. Ready?
Born and raised?
How did you start spinning?
It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but recently I really took an active interest in it. As a performer we’d always be at venues and I’d always have the opportunity to get on the turntables but over the past year I’ve developed set lists and mixes. It’s still something I’m learning.
Favorite song to play at the height of the party?
It really depends on the crowd but right now, MC Breed’s “Aint No Future In Yo Frontin’.”
What did you want to be when you were little?
An astronaut, I thought spaceships were super cool.
Who are you DJ idols?
I’ve always looked up to DJ Jazzy Jeff and now I really enjoy seeing DJ Questlove spin. DJ Eleven, Rich Medina, DJ Lowkey (Tanya Morgan’s tour DJ), DJ Soul, DJ Getlive, Mick Boogie and Terry Urban are also favorites.
Who is the most interesting person in the world?
The Dos Equis guy, of course.
What’s your favorite country to visit?
Canada, I’ve got a lot of friends in Toronto and I’ve seen most of the country. It’s interesting place and the people are awesome.
What’s your favorite saying?
I say ‘at the end of the day’ a lot lately. I don’t know if it’s my favorite but it’s surely snuck into my daily conversation. I’ve also grown a fondness for ‘it is what it is.’
What piece of clothing do you wear everyday, barring undies?
Glasses and I’d never switch to contacts. Even if I got lasik to correct my vision, I’d wear frames for fashion.
What’s the last thing you bought to wear?
True Blue Jordan 3’s. Nostalgia man!
Favorite guilty pleasure?
Singing along to Beyoncé’s “Love On Top.” That shit is great and the modulation at the song’s end is incredible. I’ma catch hell for that one.
High Fidelity, of course lol.
What’s your definition of a good day?
Whenever I can get a paycheck and a great meal.
