I am really shocked and slightly humored by your response. Do you truely believe that black people are lazy and ignorant ? Also who told that black people didn’t help their selves in terms of slavery? Have you ever heard of the underground railroad?

Then how is this for an argument:
The character of Sinterklaas exists in other Germanic countries in the spirit of the same festivities and performs the same function. His well known helper does too.  The Dutch however have taken what was essntially to be the portrayal of a devil or demon(Krakus), and turned him into an afro wearing, black-face having, red-lipped, slang-talking  (trust me this time its aptly coined) nigger.

I cannot begin to desribe the pain of having your parents tell you everyday that your color is nothing to be ashamed of and that you have the same right to be respected as anyone, and go outside and have kids and adults call you Zwarte Piet. It freaks you out at first because you never associated yourself or your family with this ignorant portrayal of a black person; well the Dutch do, and every year they can’t wait to throw it in your face and laugh it off saying “its for the kids” while they laugh at you behind your back, and some even in your face (we’re still talking about adults here. Kids do it too, but thats expected because kids are cruel).

So every year for a month (thats how long the media and retail reminds you of their secret loathing for you) you walk around with a fake smile because god forbid you speak out against this blatant racism. In case you do have something to say about it, be ready to defend yourself from accusations of trying to destroy a children’s holiday, and that Zwarte Piet (=Black Pete) is really a representation of a spanish/turkish chimney-sweeper.

I don’t know if you know any Spaniards or Turks. I do. They don’t like anything like ol’ boy “Black Pete” does even with genuine “chimney charcoal” on them.

I no longer expect any Dutch to look at this failure of a holiday unfavorably. In fact, I’m shocked every time I meet a white Dutchman that’s as sickened by this as I am and have been for the past 23 years(hated the holiday ever since I was four years old).

But then again…the Dutch aren’t exactly well known for their contributions to human rights. You have to remember that this is the culture that literally wrote the book (descended from slaves from one of their old colonies Suriname as I am, I actually have read excerpts from old pamphlets and letters) on slave-trade and segregation. None of us are surprised by this really, and its by far one of the mildest of their transgressions against my people in comparison.

Still doesn’t excuse them from basically making fun of “the niggers” every godforsaken year.

The writer failed (epicly I might add) to convey a sense of….you know what I don’t even know what the hell the writer was thinking. The article is however a perfect reflection of how detached Dutch society is from reality when it comes to issues of race.

I understand this word is use in the black culture, by some not all. I think we all are missing the point here. I’m glad that in your heart you see all people in this world as human. However everyone doesn’t see all races as a human. What many years ago is the pass. May I add, walk a mile in someone else shoes. I can see how it is an offensive term and do not understand why it is accepted as a regular word by some black persons but no one else can use it. I mean its a term from the slave times! I think that some people should make a move to ban these terms altogether, I think its racist for anyone to use. I think the magazine probably used it as such of a shock factor. Why would they do this, because its an accepted term that should be unaccepted and perhaps be seen as profane and unacceptable.

Statistically, white men marry black women as often as black men marry white women. Please stop spouting baseless arguments. If anything could be pointed to as the reason some black men marry white women, it could be said that society tells us what is sexy. Perhaps men, in general, have been gradually brainwashed. This articles lack of knowledge on how to describe people is not totally their fault. It is the fault of every person who was not taught or doesnt not respect others regardless of race. In this day and age, where ever one goes around the world, terminology such as this is being used just as commonly as it is between the familiar African-Americans that have used it since only God knows when. No matter how familiar a person is, they should never lower themselves and the people around them by degrading each other. Period. Stop degrading each other and others wont degrade you. This is what all young people today need to be taught, no matter their race.
