Jackie Mag Editor Eva Hoeke Quits Following Rihanna ‘Niggabitch’ Debacle

December 20, 2011 | Parlour Fam

Sometimes a joke … is not a joke. Sadly, Eva Hoeke (at left), Editor-In-Chief of Dutch magazine Jackie learned this the hard way in the past 36 hours when she issued the most non-apology-apology for her publication’s decision to refer to Rihanna as a “niggabitch” in their latest issue. After we reported the rundown, Rihanna issued her own response directly to Eva via Twitter that ended with “Fuck You.” Well, it seems that Eva has had it up to here with the mess that her own niggabitchness has created, so she’s decided to quit her job as editor. We got our hands on the press release, here is a translation: Read the rest

Eva Hoeke Quits as Editor-in-Chief of Jackie

Following a recent publication in Jackie magazine, issue 49, a worldwide outcry arose over an article on page 45 entitled “De Niggabitch”, which refers to Rihanna and her style of dress. This word is used in America as slang.

Throughout the various social media there has been an emotional response to this choice of words, as published in Jackie. As a first reaction to this editor-in-chief Eva Hoeke said via Twitter that the choice of words was meant as a joke and offered an apology to anyone who felt offended. This reaction cause further consternation, as Hoeke herself also referred to the term elsewhere in the magazine. In a second reaction through Twitter, Hoeke came to the following conclusion: ‘1. Don’t publish bad jokes in the magazine 2. Don’t pretend as if a bad joke is good. Sorry guys. My bad.’ The response on social media now took on an international character. In a third reaction Hoeke even offered to rectify in the next issue of Jackie. This morning Rihanna response on the article through Twitter. She was furious over the use of the word ‘niggabitch’ and ended her message with ‘Fuck you Eva’. Through social media Hoeke was taunted and threatened in various ways.

Following these events she consulted with publisher Yves Gijrath of GMG. Together they came to the following joint conclusion:  In the interest of Jackie Magazine and all involved she will leave her function as editor-in-chief effective immediately. Hoeke gives the following comment:

“I realize that my first reaction through Twitter, in which I indicated that it was a joke, has been an incomplete description of what me, and also the author of the article, meant. The term ‘niggabitch’ came from America and we solely used it to describe a style of dress. Because of the enormous pressure through social media I was tempted to promise amendment regarding the language in future issues of Jackie. Apart from that I also offered an rectification. I have now come to the conclusion that rectification is not the right solution. I regret that I have taken a stand too quickly regarding an article in Jackie — which moreover had no racial motive at its basis. Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately. After putting my heart and soul into for Jackie for eight years, I realize that these errors  although not intented maliciously  are enough reason for leaving.”

Publisher Yves Gijrath regrets the state of affairs and praises Hoeke’s attitude, who primarily chooses for the credibility of the title, which – as she realizes herself – would have been damaged had she stayed. According to Gijrath there’s no doubt about the intentions and qualities of Eva Hoeke, however he does think this joint decision is the correct one. Hoeke concludes:

“I should have counted to ten before taking unnuanced stands through social media channels. Through this my credibility has been hurt and that neither fits the role of an editor-in-chief, nor Jackie Magazine. Jackie Magazine will invite Rihanna to share her feelings and thoughts on the article in the next issue.”

Well there it is folks. Offensive article runs. Editor in Chief offers a half-apology. Artist responds. Editor in Chief quits. I wonder if the response that this ignited globally will make a difference in how issues like this are handled in the future or if Hoeke’s resignation is simply a temporary solution to a deep-rooted problem.

look in the mirror. you’re the one who needs to grow up. just what in the hell is allowing you to be so obtuse and myopic that you seriously think some of your own DUTCH countrymen don’t think zwarte piet is racist? read it and weep. this is about DUTCH PEOPLE IN YOUR OWN COUTNRY protesting this racist abomination of a traditon: http://tigerbeatdown.com/2011/11/14/if-you-protest-racism-during-black-face-season-in-the-netherlands-you-will-be-beaten-up-and-arrested/ mocking the accents of the people you used to enslave and beating people up when they protest racism is racist as hell. you think this is just americans pushing p.c. sensitivity onto the dutch? open your fucking eyes.

and gee, OTHER DUTCH PEOPLE clearly thought the article was racist, because they read it, and they were the FIRST PEOPLE to complain that it was racist! not americans reading the translated article! but i’m going to humor you a little bit anyway: you see the big ass “niggabitch” in the title right? because i can’t read dutch and THAT translated well for me. dutch or english, calling a black person a “niggabitch” is RACIST.

and stop leaving out the context of WHY it is was brought up the netherlands being a slave trading country. people brought that up in response to the asinine claim that the netherlands does not have a similar history with racism as the u.s. both countries condoned selling, owning, and dehumanizing black people. and both countries in the PRESENT DAY have persistant issues with racism because of their past with slavery. no so fucking different, is it?

  • bb

Seems like everyone wants to call out the editor for being racist yet NO ONE wants to call out black men for using the N word or the B word (I live in the South so please don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about). Love the double standard….

  • Dr.Charles

NOW!!  The true “Shoot them all,” American shows up to demonstrate to you Mr. Hsp just why the word is so offensive to me.  I’ve had to live with Stupid Assess all my life (63 YEARS) and I’m tired of their shit.  I’ll be willing to bet you that Fox ( Cartoon Network has already offered the editor a job.  Only in America,  (as tears come to my eyes) ONLY in America.  She made Russ Limpd@#k proud.

  • Kammundi

Self censorship and tattle tales are the way of the future.  Creativity and imagination are rapidly becoming extinct.  The cutting edge will no longer cut.  Unless you are black or ethnic enough in some way to be on the side of the politically and socially righteous.

You wear being “FULL OF SHIT” like the uniform of the day.

Where do you think that these Racist Assholes in America came from?????

If I said to you,  Bull Shit would you understand it?  If I called you an Asshole would you understand that?  And you’re telling me that this woman did not know what a N….Bitc444 is.  Negro Please!!!!!!

  • Kammundi

Actually negro isn’t an insulting word.  In many languages it simply means black.  The latin for black is niger.   Should we start changing the names of the colors now?   Give me strength…

  • HH

Er….has anyone actually read Rihanna’s Twitter posts ???  She writes Nigger this, Nigger that all over the place.  If she wants us to believe she was offended by that article then perhaps she should stop glamourising ghetto-speak and realise that if it’s offensive for others to say it then it’s offensive for her to say it too.

  • Debbiepe10

Look at yourself. You’re a disgrace to your community and humanity, you and your foul mouth. If there’s white trash, you’re black trash.

All you can do is cuss and swear, if anything, you’re the racist asshole. So shut your mouth and go whine somewhere else you stupid bitch.

Black people are always crying about the N word when used by other races but are quick to say it themselves in that stupid rap music and on tv and don’t get upset about it. Black people in america are the most backward people on the planet . Stop trying to play the victim and deal with the mess you have created for yourselves. If that word truely offends you, then you need to stop using it. Have some respect for yourselves first and maybe you’ll get some respect in return and you wonder why the black race is the most hated race on the planet. BLACK PEOPLE YOU ARE NOT VICTIMS, JUST YOUR OWN WORST ENEMY!

  • Amyruh12

These people need to think of a better excuse for their B***S***!
Who on earth told them N****B**** is a slang in America, the Klan?

  • Lacresha1977

Wow, these silly Europeans say whatever they want about us…….

  • West Sipiwe

I don’t care what country it is in. Everyone in this world knows that if you have heard the term, then you know it is a deragatory way to reference African Americans.  Russians, if what you are saying is true, know this is completely offensive…don’t make excuses for blatant racism.

  • Typical DUTCH

This is typical Dutch. I have live in Holland for years. When it comes to racial sensitivity, the country is FAR behind. Whether it is the slang here, the  Zwarte Pieten, etc., Dutch people sweep everything under the rug and claim that it is “tradition.” Look up the history of these words/”traditions” people. Simply ignoring their origins lends itself to IGNORANCE. The Netherlands is FAR from a tolerant country. They are tolerant when it comes to gay marriage, prostitution, and drugs. THATS IT. When it comes to race and giving populations other than white populations respect, they’ve got it all backwards. Call a white man a “Homo Jew” here and its on the news for a week, call a black person a “Nikker” or dress up like one and impersonate them…. it is ignored. We will probably see this story on the news in Holland this week. Sadly, the only reason why is because it involves Rihanna (the Dutch love pretending that they are a part of pop culture, they are not, they are insignificant in the music world/pop culture). Had it been anyone NON FAMOUS this story would have been ignored, just like any other racially insensitive story involving black people here.

  • TanyaQ

So true! I grew up in The Netherlands. Living here for 28 years.  Dutch caucasian people are still  perplexed that I can speak Dutch without an accent. If a racial comment is being made, it’s being brushed off as a sarcastic joke. It’s just rude behaviour from people who learned it from their elder and peers.

  • The Truth

To those trying to argue with the Dutch people here… just stop. They are ignorant. They see this as an attack on their country and want to blame the situation on the U.S. or whoever else they can think of. The truth is that this isn’t a Dutch OR an American problem. This is a HUMAN problem engraved at the core of many unknowledgeable populations.

  • Dudething77

How about you try and not generalize an entire population you moron. It may be true that rappers and other blacks use the word frequently, but they do NOT speak for the entire population nor are they a representation of the population. Turn off the i pod. Step away from the T.V. and actually get to know the entire culture before you pass judgement.

  • Riri rules Crop Over!

Don’t worry Boboytigasin we don’t immediately think all people from NL are racist.
The issues about race and who can comment I’ve devloped from several years of marriage to a “brown lady” as a “pink man”.
I’ve got friends who use the term every day who might even say “pass me those little n’s with regards to crisps”. This is not a word that I will ever use. But as far as I’m concerned I have no right to tell them what to say or not to say. If they chose to remove the power of this word over them that’s fine.
My wife is Barbadian who would never use the word. But she’d be insulted by this and by being called Jamaican.

To Eva Hoeke all I can say is that not everyone can marry a beautiful Barbadian wife to teach them about life but you can be smart enough not to comment on issues you know nothing about.

Language is there to separate us but we can also learn from it. For those of you from the US when I talk about “crisps” I’m talking about what you call “chips”. Now I would find it unlikely that anyone gets upset by this confusion, but you never know. I’ve not yet been to the US but I’ve still learnt this and I would expect any worthwhile  journalist to have done enough research to understand the subject they’re talking about.

  • NotAnAmerican

This is so ridiculous. I’m tired of Americans thinking the rest of the world revolves around them!!!! This is a Dutch magazine, but of course, nosey Americans need to chime in on their opinion and think it’s all about them!!! AMERICANS, the world does NOT revolve around you!!! “Ri-Ri,” where’s Chris Brown when you need him? I think you need another smack to the face!

  • Boricua

Despite the country, it is an offensive word.  It should have NEVER been printed.  Rihanna the woman at the receiving end of the word was offended and hurt.  In the end thats all that matters.

  • dietcokehead

Aren’t you precious? It is with absolute American pride that I say based on the last line of your post…I’m happy you are NOT an American.

  • Mialoedy

fuck you, racist piece of white garbage. i can respond to your blatantly racist comments and shameless lying any fucking way that i want to. if that involves profanity, OH WELL.  don’t like it? I DON’T GIVE A FUCK, because i don’t have any respect for a lying, phony ass victim of “reverse racism” piece of dog shit like yourself.

  • Mialoedy

and it’s completely laughable that you think that you’re not a complete disagrace to your people and humanity when you think you can come on a public board and fix your stupid, idiotic, braindead fingers to accuse black people “pulling the slavery card”. how dare you?!? if you seriously think no one would respond or get ANGRY, you’re dumber then i thought, shit for brains.

why don’t you do the world a favor and light yourself on fire on one of those crosses you and your inbred relatives like so much?

  • Proud AMERICAN!

obviously not American, but probably another Dutch person with an inferiority complex.  First off, Rihanna is not an American She is, however, a women, who happens to be black. She, and surely no other women, deserves to be called this derogatory name! Second, although she is not American, her career was started there and she is a huge public figure there OF COURSE you’re going to have lots of Americans defending her. It would just be like if some American insulted Queen Beatrix, Marco Barsato, or annyyy other Dutch public figure (would never happen though because they are all insignificant to Americans). Third, it was the Dutch who acknowledge the racist tone in the article. Fourth, it is now an INTERNATIONAL story, so Americans are not the only ones who are “chiming” in. Get your facts straight. Hating ass!

  • http://www.facebook.com/fvandenbold Frank van den Bold

    Hi Tanya,

That may be true for some people in your surroundings, but it isn’t for the whole of Netherlands. You pinpoint the Dutch as a discriminative nation which doesn’t do justice to the large majority of Dutch folks. The ‘Zwarte Pieten’ (zwart = black, Piet is a help for a sort of Santa Claus in NL, apart from the ‘real’ Santa)  is a tradition for children, derived from religious backgrounds from the days of slavery. The history is bad but nowadays nobody (and I mean nobody for the full 100%) ever links this sad fact to the tradition it is today (thus to racsim or even discrimination). The event is just an excuse to pamper your children with gifts and getting together with the family. It is absolutely innocent in the people’s mindset. Which doesn’t change the fact that our new co-inhabitants (Black, Hispanic, Asian, Moslim people, etc.) from the second half of the last century may be offended (not everybody is). I think every normal Dutch native (yes, I mean us cheeseheads) will tell you that and will try to explain that to you.

Recon the fact that America has taken large steps the last few decades to change racist feelings into full acceptation of people from all races. The whole world was relieved that Obama became a president, which proved the US to have become a nation of all people. The US is all mixed up now which is a really really good thing. America is ahead of Europe at the moment but just came from a bad background as well, hence the fact that there are still very large parts which sadly stood still for that matter. Europe still struggles with this matter in their own backyard. The tolerance maybe makes a kind of a paradigm shift from time to time due to the fact that we now have to learn to tolerate our neighbours instead of our ‘far-away-friends’. And may I say as a white guy that I think we are all the same. It’s our background that defines who we are, combined with our character and ambitions. I will only judge you by that fact. I hope you will too.

At last: the editor-in-chief of Jackie magazine made a stupid error in judgement – twice. First by accepting the piece as a funny piece for the mag. Second by thinking her lame excuse would make the whole discussion blow over. But I really don’t think she meant any harm. She is not a racist for sure! She resigned due to this whole thing and I think she is very unhappy at the moment. I think we have to forgive her by now… She paid her dues in two days, but worth a life-time of sorrow. I think nobody deserves that, when she just made a harsh mistake.
And the whole discussion took off in the Netherlands right away, by all poeple, including white folks. We despised the article right away. And I think Rihanna is a pretty cool chick. ;-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/fvandenbold Frank van den Bold

The Dutch are more and more adapting Black People instead of negroes dut to the fact that Black people like this term better and is more commonly used in The US and the UK. The negerzoen candy was not meant to be racist in any matter I think.

  • Amsterdam

Rihanna isn’t even an ”african-american” :S !??? Get over it NIGGAHBITCH! There I said it… Got a problem with that?! Go talk to 90% of the ”african-americans” who are ”allowed” to say ”nigga”. Rihanna says the word ”nigga” all the time, even tho she isn’t ”african-american”!?

Either when EVERYONE (black, white, blue, yellow, purple) says the word ”niggah(bitch) it’s racist, or NO ONE.

    Hypocrits!

(By the way… Rihanna thinks she is a ”nigga’ (she says it al the time on Twitter) and she can be a bitch some times! So… I don’t see the problem…?)

In what other country do you see this on this scale!? Where is de KKK founded? Black people weren’t aloud to vote until the late sixties! It took centuries before a black man was voted president…

  • Sakhmet2

All I can say is “Russians who think the n-word is an appropriate way to describe African-Americans should stay out of North America because using it will get your asses kicked”.

  • Sakhmet2

I think we need to look up racism in a good dictionary.
Merriam-Webster says it’s a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race2: racial prejudice or discrimination

  • Lupardi

Now that’s complete BS. North Africans are treated like animals. Outside the capitals-centre in France there are the suburbs, where heavy race-related riots took place. We never had those here…nor do we have getto’s like the Parisian suburbs where the riots where.

  • Lupardi

    Funny…or just stupid. You’re right. I’m sorry.

  • hey hey

Please buddy, I have lived in the Netherlands for sometime now and the place is more racist than America ANY DAY! There are many neo-nazis in the netherlands and other racist groups and you guys have not even had a black prime-minister fucking loser. Moreover, people of color continue to be segregated in terrible neighborhoods throughout the entire country. Adding more fuel to the fire is the constant insults these people receive from Dutch people like you. I have heard it all, “Turk this, Moroccan that, stupid nigger that”.  Get a clue, YOU are pathetic. Yet another Dutchy with an inferiority complex. If this were an American who said it, everyone would still be just as upset. Now, go run along and play with your American products, wear your American cloths and eat at our restaurants. You’re Welcome.

The dumbest thing is when Americans criticize Netherlands for it’s racism. USA is one of the most racist countries in the world where, New York police profile blacks as criminals, Black people in prison are granted less pardons as white people, and there’s something called the KKK and oh yeah, huge GETTO’s. The white people in the USA don’t care for the black people in the USA, the public schools where black people are majority are the worst, and don’t get extra funding. Compare that to the Netherlands, where everything black is supported by extra money, we want black people to succeed. Sure, In America white people can’t use the word nigga, but black people in songs can. And In the Netherlands you have Zwarte Piet and Negerzoen. As always, Americans care only about appearance. As long as it seems you are not racist it is good, but that’s not the real problem, the problem is that black people do worse in society. And this is what Netherlands does alot better than USA. So don’t you call the Netherlands racist, by your own actions you are even more racist if the Netherlands is racist. You are the same people that vote for an adulterer Gingrich while he preaches against gay-marriage, only because he’s a great debater. So hypocrite! P.S. where’s your gay marriage? You’re so racist against gays!

  • Anonymous

The second dumbest thing is Dutch people apologizing for the  use of niggabitch.  “Please don’t think we Dutch are racist we are sorry and not like Eva Hoeke” These people are also the worst, they are only apologizing because that’s what Dutch people do everyday, apologize to be a Dutch person. It’s a form of self-hate. Why does a random Dutch guy needs to apologize for something another Dutch person did? Unless the Americans stereotyped the entrie Netherlands based on just Eva Hoeke. Racism! Second people criticize the Dutch directness as it tends to offend people. Sorry but most Dutch people don’t care about appearance, they care about results. You white people in the USA don’t use the word nigga but put black people in getto’s, as appearance of not being racist matters more instead of ACTUALLY NOT being racist. While in Netherlands we might do and we give money to black people so they can succeed. Who the real racist?

  • WTF

When did this become an American v.s. Dutch thing? This has nothing to do with what country is the most racist. Moreover, you are probably the last person to be able to prove something that can not be proved! You compiled such a hefty list, Kudos!  To bad most of your statements are generalizations and or false. The Netherlands has its fair share of racial profiling. I have been subject to it on numerous occasions. And you guys want black people to succeed? haha. Ya, that’s why a majority of them live in the slums of the Netherlands and most state that they feel like second-class citizens. Gay Marriage… welp lots of states have passed this into law and the sum of those populations out number the netherlands. Is gay marriage legalized across Europe? No. Is it legalized across America? No. It is legalize in the netherlands, congrats, a miniscule country within the EU. Woo hoo! Way to go guys! Also, there are FAR more successful people of color in the U.S. when compared to the Netherlands. This is a fact. And atleast the U.S. is willing to put racism on its agenda and talk about it when something is distressing to a population. Your country continues to ignore “the black people you want to succeed.”

    Does your mother?

When Americans enter the realm of racism, they lose all common sense. Just read all the comments under the article.

Rihanna finds nigga offensive. Then why does she uses the word nigga in lyrics for her songs? So she obviously doesn’t find it offensive, she only does when a white girl uses it. All the examples illustrate blatant hypocrisy of which this is a great example.

Eva Hoeke is racist and the article is racist. Is this really true? Where is your common sense, it is down the drain. Would a white supremacist girl journalist use the word nigga to be racist, for all eyes to see? Ofcourse not! A true racist would keep stuff like this hidden, as not to jeopardize their job. The most likely explanation is that Eva Hoeke thought nigga was a “cool” slang word and that white people were allowed to use it. Dumb maybe, but definately not racist.

Now for your comment, you Americans like to talk about racism, but don’t do anything. Words are more important than your actions, which speak louder. It is covert racism, and far worse than the racism in the Netherlands. You guys pretend to be anti-racist, but are secretly racist, this is more worse than a racist being racist because he doesn’t know better.

  • Mialoedy

go fuck yourself, racist piece of shit. the reason you don’t see a problem with white people calling a black woman a “niggabitch” is because you are a racist! just own it. you are a racist piece of garbage. and just so  you know, you don’t EVER get to tell black people when or if to use the world nigga. all that YOU need to be aware of is that you as a white person, can’t say it. don’t like it? don’t understand it? OH WELL. why don’t you do something useful  and pick up a book and educate yourself about the subject or better yet GET THE FUCK OVER IT.

and the netherlands is extremely racist. since when does america being racist mean that the netherlands isn’t racist? are you really THAT stupid? seriously, shut the fuck up.

  • LoVe

Why and since when n*gga isn’t racist anymore in your country?

Please post us an verifiable evidence.

  • LoVe

All of us live in black neighbourhoods. Send your kids to a black school. And share intimate relationships with black friends.

  • Jan Peterson

Lia you need to listen more to things people say more often than. I don’t give two fucks! if you are black or not. Blacks think they are the only ones aloud to use that word. Also blacks are some of the most racist people out there. The majority of them will be the first to say “its because I’m black” when no its not, its because you’re stupid. Blacks bring race into the mix more so than any other race. I have heard a lot of black people yell out other racial slurs but the second someone says “nigger” or even “nigga” they flip the fuck out if the person saying it is not black. Well, fuck that if they can call other races by racial slurs don’t get mad when they are used back. (I’m not saying that was the case here, but I’m saying in general.) Besides the blacks aren’t even the race that had the most injustice done to them. That would be my people…. Native Americans.
If blacks want that word to stop being used, they themselves have to stop using the word. They are no more special than any other race on this planet and should get no special treatment what so ever.

We are all created equal. Period.

  • Basil Johnson

What evidence do you have to support your believe that”he did not understand”,and “nigga bitch” in any langauge SHOULD sound offensive to a supposedly educated reporter or the sentence investigated before being published in a SUPPOSEDLY   respectable magazine
