Parlour’s Best Of 2011!: Kreayshawn Likes Black People, So What?

Since we’re on a mental and physical vacation this week — I’m in Connecticut, Shannon’s in New Jersey, then London and Paris, and Sherry’s in Adele’s favorite city — we’re serving up Parlour’s Best of 2011! Each day this week, you’ll get a chance to reminisce on what made us all laugh, cry and suck our teeth during the last 12 months. I dug up a few of our faves! Ready?

__________

During the spring, hip-hop made the acquaintance of a newbie would-be rapper called Kreayshawn, born Natassia Zolot. This little girl who happens to be white, a lesbian (aka veritable man catnip, the irony) and from California’s Bay Area — the actual city of her origin is debatable — became every hipster and Complex-esque dude’s favorite fresh face thanks to a hot beat called “Gucci Gucci” and a swag she gleaned from her punk rock singing mom. Still, I wasn’t sure if I should shun her just because she likes to have black and brown friends and feels more comfortable in that environment. I’m not sure about Kreayshawn. She’s a lesbian rapper from Oakland who happens to be white and friends with Lil B. The thing about Lil B is that he can’t rap … so does that mean I’m to assume that his friends can?

Upon returning from the Bay — I was back home for two weeks — I’ve had plenty of time to listen to Kreay’s “Gucci Gucci” single that’s ultimately gotten her signed with Columbia (who routinely nabs people they shouldn’t. Remember the stint with Jim Jones and The Clipse? Good talents, not the best environment for that talent). “Gucci Gucci” is a catchy song with a fun beat, but as my boy and Parlour critic Timmhotep Aku said so eloquently “She sucks.”
