Gun Ranges and Girlpower: Try Target Practice For Date Night

What do Charlie’s Angels, the ladies of Kill Bill, and you have in common? The kick-ass factor, of course. That is why a girl’s outing to the gun range is in order. Most ranges have economical hourly rates and great package deals so that you and your Angels can get a crash course on the usage of some serious weaponry at one of the many local gun ranges in the metro Atlanta area.

Based on a recent Gallop poll, the number of U.S. women who say their household possesses a gun is 43%,  a record high. Even if you don’t want to a gun in your home, knowing basic safety skills is critical as handling a firearm improperly is extremely dangerous. With solid training you can feel empowered and in control, armed with the knowledge of how to correctly use a weapon, especially under duress, if ever needed.

For beginners, it is definitely a good idea to seek professional guidance and learn the fundamental operation of a firearm with a smaller caliber pistol, then skill build with some target practice before using a more aggressive weapon. There are a number of resources online, such as Girls Guide to Guns, a site that specifically targets women and provides informative articles, videos, product recommendations and firearm education.

Since there is no substitute for hands-on training, here is a list of a few places to go in the metro Atlanta area that are happy to assist you and your girl-crew, regardless if you all are first-timers or seasoned assassins shooters.

Where To Go:

Quickshot 1199 Zonalite Road, NE Atlanta, Ga

Best time to go: Date Night Thursdays, 6-9 PM. Two people can shoot for $30.00, plus the price of ammo and targets. Package includes a free rental of any handgun, semi-automatic rifle, shotgun, eye and ear protection plus one hour of lane time.

Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range 8040 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs, GA 30350

Owned and operated by two ladies, Cara and Robyn Marzullo, the best time to go is Ladies Day Thursday when range time is free. You’ll have to pay to rent firearms, ammo and protective gear; however, for a group of 10, shooters can get a party package at $50 per person, which is all-inclusive.

Ladies get free range time on Wednesdays with the purchase ammo and targets. The offer does not include groups, private lessons or training classes.

Finally, before heading out, here are a few things to consider:

Comfort is key, consider sporting long sleeves and jeans to protect your skin from any unwanted burns from fallen shell casings and comfortable shoes — as it is likely that you’ll be standing up most of the time. Also, you may want to wear your hair pulled back to avoid shells getting lodged in your locks. Other protective gear such goggles and earphones can be rented onsite.
