When on vacation, it is almost always expected that you’re going to spend some dough to have a good time. Fortunately, we Atlantans are quite hospitable and are not shy about welcoming our out-of-town guests. And since summer is all about being footloose and free, here are my favorite spots to grill, chill and save a dollar bill.
Nothing says summertime like hanging out on weekday. For the past ten years this free concert series has entertained us with the best local and national touring acts like Floetry back in the day, to new comers like CC Le Fleur. Cruise over hump-day by relaxing with an evening of live entertainment every Wednesday. April through September from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Centennial Olympic Park Southern Company Amphitheater.
Get fancy by adding some culture (and wine) to your evening as you leisurely saunter through one of Atlanta’s most remarkable new art districts. Located near the Atlanta University Center, Castleberry Hill is on the rise as a neighborhood, featuring a diverse selection of galleries and minority-owned restaurants. While you’re there, check out what city-living has to offer in few of the unique neighborhood lofts. Fourth Friday of every month, 7-10 PM.
Bring your appetite to this new festival which will be held at Piedmont Park showcasing the top ten Atlanta area food trucks and will also feature live entertainment from local bands on Saturday, July 14, 2012. Still hungry? Be sure to keep track of the food truck movement, their whereabouts and regular meet spots through their website The Atlanta Street Food Coalition.
Beginning at sundown, the Atlantic Station outdoor shopping district presents its own quaint movie screening series. This is your best bet in the city to catch old and semi-new feature films. We finally have an alternate solution for the now defunct ‘Screen on the Green’ series. Get there early with your blanket or lawn chair and some snacks to munch on, as space is limited.
