Keep It Tight: Eating Healthy, Bajan Style

Whether you are a vegetarian, a gluten-free gluton, a juice enthusiast or just love eating healthy, being away from home doesn’t mean you have to fall off the wagon, especially in Barbados. Aside from boasting a bevy of restaurants that serve plenty of fish, vegetables and fresh cuisine from the island, Barbados is also home to a few great options for keeping your body’s balance while sight-seeing, shopping, surfing and relaxing. Not to mention your meals will also support local businesses, farmers and give you a taste for Bajan life. Here are a few healthy options to keep you fit:

Holders Farmers Market [info]
Where: On the grounds of Holders House, St. James Parish
When: Every Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Why: When stepping out to eat, chances are the food that you’re consuming won’t be local—Barbados, like many islands of the Caribbean, currently import over 80% of their beverages and food to include produce. The Holders market is a great way to meet and support local vendors, learn some cool local recipes and see a side of the island not available from a hotel window. Most of the produce at the market is organic, and you can also pick up local jellies, jams, artwork, natural body care products and more.

Jenn Heath & Beauty [info]
Where: Five locations along the West Coast (St. Michael, St. Peter, and Christ Church)
When: Contact the store closest to you for hours
Why: The Barbadian answer to GNC, Jenn has been around since 1985 and is the leading natural and health food retailer. The chain carries most major brands in the event that you leave something at home. Their Bridgetown location also has a deli that features a variety of healthy, vegetarian and pescatarian options for good food on the go.

Body Restoration [info]
Where: Holetown, St. James, inside of the West Coast Mall
Why: A small, yet well-edited selection of supplements, teas, vitamins and more can be found in this small shop on the top floor of the West Coast Mall in St. James. It’s central location to many west coast hotels make it a good first-stop for anyone looking for healthy snacks when lounging poolside.
