Need a weekend getaway? Make your way far west for a capital city retreat in Sacramento, CA. Nestled in the northern part of California’s expansive Central Valley, Sacramento is one of the state’s largest and diverse cities.
WHERE TO STAY: Pull into town and drop off your bags downtown at Hotel Citizen. The space’s amenities include a great rooftop view of the downtown area and the well-known Grange Restaurant & Bar. Grange is known for its “farm to the table” method of using fresh local farm produce and meats. Of the 198 hotel rooms, almost every one has its own unique look, making each stay a new experience. A part of the Joie de Vivre Hotels, a grass roots organization, Hotel Citizen is dedicated to donating at a minimum $200 per guest room per year to organizations in the area. So a stay at Hotel Citizen not only does well for its guests but can also help the surrounding community.
WHERE TO EAT: Enjoy a peaceful patio brunch at Orphan Breakfast House tucked away in East Sacramento. Orphan Breakfast House is one of the city’s health conscious breakfast spots. The food at Orphan allows for a guilt-free start to your day without sacrificing great taste.
If you’re fond of a little less health conscious but just as delicious breakfast, Bacon and Butter is filling and worth every bite. The restaurant’s quaint and vintage ambiance transports patrons to a rustic bed and breakfast in the country. How do you not love a place that serves beverages in mason jars? Order the Biscuits and Gravy breakfast plate, loosen a belt buckle and enjoy the perfect county fare.
For a midday bite, Tako offers guests amazing flavors of Korean BBQ infused into their favorite Mexican dishes. The menu includes not only reasonable prices but also vegetarian options! The restaurant can easily be overlooked due to its small size but, you will not regret stopping in for a taste. The blueberry-infused house-made taco sauce will have you planning weekend getaways to Sacramento all year long.
Stop into Ella for dinner and check out the restaurant known for their classy atmosphere and refined New American and French-style cooking including dishes like Scottish Salmon with white coco beans. After dinner, enjoy decadent desserts and handcrafted cocktails as all your cares melt away in this lush experience.
WHAT TO DO: Spend some time in Northern California’s great outdoors on a hike or bike ride along the American River. The Sacramento area is surrounded with several different trails leaving no excuse to not try at least one. The views alone are reason to soak up some sun and treat your body to exercise.
If interested in some indoor activities then stop and visit the city’s pride and glory, the California State Capitol Building. The groundbreaking for the neo-classical styled building occurred in 1860 and the extensive job took 14 years to complete. Take time to visit the historic building, museum and the surrounding park. Open daily and easily accessible, this architectural treasure is important to take advantage of and gives no reason to miss.
WHERE TO PARTY: Do not allow a night to pass by without hitting the town. The city has a nightlife scene for everyone interested in having fun. Barwest located in Midtown can offer you a classic bar experience complete with scorpion bowls of all your favorite liquors. If you’re interested in dancing, hit Capitol Garage on a Friday night for reggae in an intimate setting. Faces, the city’s original gay bar, is open and visited by all because of the three dance floors, great music and talented go-go gyrating gentlemen. No matter what your desire, Sacramento has a place for you to enjoy your night.
