Okay, making my way towards the bathroom holding on to the wall for guidance after two or three near mishaps and banging my toe on the door, I make it to the bathroom sink. Open the taps and…nothing.
.
Welcome to my life as it is currently, no water, no electricity and maybe at this point I should state that all my utility bills are paid on time. So there I was on a Monday morning, and I haven’t ironed my clothes, and I haven’t showered.
.
Kenya, my dear home country that I love dearly is going through what we like to call the rationing period. Essentials come in rations; electricity, water and for some of our citizens food. (more…)

Kenyan Kulture: Down With Video Vixens!

Before you get ahead of yourself this is not a campaign against all the double D’s, no waist, perfect hips women who parade themselves through music videos on your television screens. However, I might soon start a campaign called “Death Be to Music Videos,” especially hip-hop videos. Kenyan culture is changing by the day especially among the younger generation, including the type of music we are listening to and the lifestyle we are living.

Now change is not always a good thing. Kenyan society has generally been very conservative when it comes to the language being used. Now I can barely go a day without hearing someone cursing their tongue out, or watching a new music video with pretty young girls trying to hard to mimic what they saw on MTVBase in a 50 cent video. Image and video hosting by TinyPicHow many times have you checked your Facebook account today? Chances are you are probably logged in as you reading this, right? Well, a couple of weeks ago I found myself in a situation that most women would kill for.
.
My man, who swears his undying love for me, forgot to log out of his FB account. Now, like any inquisitive young woman would, I went straight for his inbox and needless to say I’m the newest member into the single women club.

In a nutshell, I couldn’t keep up with all the women who were being “entertained” by my then-boyfriend.

So after weeks, yes I said it, weeks of cursing and crying I’ve moved on BUT I still have this extremely nagging question on my mind, is cyber-sex cheating? I might need some clarification here.

You have to understand, in Kenya polygamy is illegal under constitutional law however under customary law, it is allowed. So most men are brought up believing they are the head of the household and having more than one woman/wife is OK. A load of BS I know, and any young woman in this day and age won’t even entertain the idea of a second wife in her house.

Still here’s my question, if your better half is having a cyber fling with someone across the world, is he cheating on you?

I usually get glorious spiritual realizations after an inspirational drink (preferably vodka, tonic, and a slice of lime) and the other day my epiphany smacked me in the face.

The year is over!

Where is the year racing to? We are already in May and the thought of the year ending makes me want to bury my head in the sand. Why? You might wonder since this is our first meeting. Let me not get ahead of myself , I’m Sheila by the way, a radio host based in Nairobi, Kenya.

I’ll be sharing my two cents here on Parlour about what I like to call Kenyan Kulture; fashion, politics, music, art and my life. And speaking of my life, back to my crisis, let me break it down: (more…)
