Sound of 2009: Who’s Up Next?

Every winter the BBC puts together a list of 15 music artists tipped to make it big. It’s an influential list that finds the best up and coming acts for the coming year, the winner is then announced in January.
Previous winners include Adele (whom PLR told you about FIRST! Steely told ya!) – who won in 2008. Duffy, The Ting Tings and Glasvegas. Considering the success that Adele has had on both sides of the Atlantic this year…the list is usually spot on.
It’s put together by more than 130 of the UK’s top music critics, and broadcasters. There are a couple of US artists like Kid Cudi, and Lady Gaga. The full list is below, but I’ve posted videos from a handful of the UK and other international artists on the list. The Big Pink, Dan Black, VV Brown, Empire of the Sun, Florence and the Machine, Frankmusik, Kid Cudi, La Roux, Lady Gaga, Little Boots, Master Shortie, Mumford & Sons, Passion Pit, The Temper Trap and White Lies.
The Big Pink
The Big Pink: London duo Milo Cordell and Robbie Furze

Dan Black: Londoner who now lives in Paris. Covered Biggie’s Hyptonise, and turned it into an epic pop song.

VV Brown: Northampton-born Vanessa Brown is next in line with the UK’s take on 60s retro.

The Temper Trap: They’re apparently “the best live band in Australia right now”. Their debut album is produced by Jim Abbiss who was at the controls for the first albums of Adele and The Artic Monkeys.

Master Shortie: Real name Theo Kerlin. 19-year-old MC, songwriter and model from Swindon. He’s a mix of hip-hop, indie, pop, electrofunk. Poster boy of the scene.

To get your view from across the pond, Miss London Party will be your guide. Every week, she’ll be casting her eye over the big stories happening with the Brits. From fashion to entertainment to current affairs to politics, she’s got you covered. A Londoner born and bred, she’s worked as a journalist for two of the UK’s biggest broadcasters, and is currently presenting daily TV news — so she’ll be giving you an inside view on events. In her free time, she likes sitting in the pub on a Sunday afternoon, going through the newspapers, drinking a glass (actually a bottle) of wine, and tucking into a good ol’ English roast. Cliched, but true! She plays netball, swims and is ever so slightly addicted to trashy US shows on her cable TV.
