Last night (June 23) R&B singer-songwriter-producer Ryan Leslie completed his two night residency at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom, where he made a point to rap about his independence from his former label, Universal Motown Records.

For many, Leslie is an obscure singer with long head and an affinity for rectangular sunglasses. The crowd at Bowery Ballroom affirmed Leslie’s talent by chanting “Ryan!” before the performer even hit the stage. Backed by a five-piece band and three background singers, he began the show with a few bars describing his recent departure from Universal Motown.

“They never really understood what I want trying to do, had me feeling like Miles Davis, kinda blue,” rhymed Leslie. “Never had a top ten but you still respect my art… go check my girl on that February Vogue cover… No matter what it takes I’ma get my glory.”
