Campeones del Mundo! The Spaniards did it! The first time Spain has ever reached the World Cup Finals they go all the way and return home with the most cherished trophy in football giving the nation something to smile about amidst its financial woes. Thank you INIESTA. That was un golazo. Thank you CASILLAS. You saved Spain’s ass more than one time.
Sunday night major plazas and streets here in Barcelona and throughout Spain erupted in a long overdo celebration and continued on through Monday when the boys returned home from South Africa. A parade in Madrid gathering over a million spectators lasted until the wee hours of the morning and was televised on all major Spanish TV channels. I couldn’t stand to watch the parade celebration for too long because from my point of view the celebratory fiesta was a little ‘’cutre’’ meaning, corny. For world football champions I would have expected more than a backdrop and a stage.
No fireworks? No confetti?
They played Queen’s “We are the Champions” but not surprisingly no one could join in beyond singing the chorus as the English lyrics baffled the crowd and footballers. Oops! Who forgot the karaoke teleprompters?
It seemed as though the organizers of the event didn’t really believe the octopus’s prediction that Spain would take it all. No lie, in Germany there was an octopus (named Paul) at some aquarium that predicted before each match who was going to win. Small tanks with food that were labeled with different flags representing the various countries participating were placed in the aquarium for the octopus to elect. And you guessed it — he picked Spain winning all their games. He had Germany winning as well until the Germany vs. Spain game and without hesitation the octopus knew that the Alemanes were going down and snagged the clams out of the Spanish tank.
Up until now, I never had a team to root for in the finals until Sunday. Lets see if in the next World Cup or at least a World Cup in my lifetime I will see the American team go all the way. Now that would be HISTORY IN THE MAKING! For now… OOOLEEE, OLE, OLE, OOOLEEE….
