Haitian Ex-Leader Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier Charged + More

Officially charged with corruption and embezzlement during his 1971-1986 rule by the Haitian government, prosecutors say, Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier seemed to be making a grab for power this weekend by reappearing after a long exile. The AP says that the “president for life” sent waves of fear through elder Haitians who remember the extreme polarization, and political violence, of the past. Duvalier — who assumed power in 1971 at age 19 following the death of his father, Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier — still has some support in Haiti and millions are too young to remember life under his dictatorship. He abruptly returned on Sunday.
