Yesterday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was the hottest place to be in American fashion. Designer Stephen Burrows and Oscar de la Renta hosted a luncheon to commemorate the legendary “Battle of Versailles” in which five American designers trumped their French counterparts in 1973 with the flyest secret weapon: eight of America’s top models of color—which was literally unheard of at the time. All of the original beauties were there to be celebrated (shown above with Stephen): Billie Blair, Alva Chinn, Pat Cleveland, Norma Jean Darden, Charlene Dash, Bethann Hardison, China Machado and Amina Warsuma.
