Frank Ocean Rocks London: A Parlour Peek

Last night, I checked out Frank Ocean‘s first U.K. performance at London’s XOYO club and I must say that I was pretty impressed. Granted, I have been a fan since Afripop‘s Phiona Okumu put me on to Nostalgia, ULTRA back in April but I left the live performance up to chance. Who knows if he would live up to his recorded work? So I walked in excited but with no real expectations and he certainly did not disappoint. The show was packed and sold out in just an hour after word of it leaked on Twitter. Ocean came to London, greeted by an eager and ready crowd including British stars like Adele, Katy B and Chipmunk.

Overall I was most happy that Ocean’s voice was consistent and solid. His pipes were almost better live than his recorded work. His stage presence was comfortable, but slightly shy, which reminded me that Frank’s still new at this. But for one solid hour, he held the room in command as he stood on stage alone backed simply by a LED screen projecting different images.

Ocean performed most of his hits from Nostalgia, but introduced a few new tunes as well. Check out video of him singing new songs “Disillusioned” and “Real Love,” courtesy of the homie Amaru Don TV. Good Times.
