Lauryn Hill Rocks NYC’s Summer Jam With Nas: Watch!

While I didn’t attend New York radio station Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert yesterday, I did catch the gist of the drama on Twitter. The rundown:

– Queens native Nicki Minaj was finally a headliner at her hometown show, she promises all types of special performances, etc.

– During the day-long festival Hot 97 morning show personality and underground hip-hop mainstay Peter Rosenberg says, according to HipHopWired, “I know there are some chicks here waiting to sing ‘Starships’ later, I’m not talking to y’all right now, fuck that bullshit. Bullshit! I’m here to talk about real hip-hop shit.”

– Somewhere near a styrofoam cup, Lil Wayne perks up, hears the statement and declares “Young Money ain’t doing summer jam” via a tweet. Young Money includes Nicki Minaj, too bad Tyga had performed already.

– Nicki Minaj falls in line with her label head/mentor, tweeting “Wow. U niggaz just fucked up history. But the President has spoken.#YMCMB. I go above and beyond for my fans. But won’t ever go against wayne’s word. What he says, goes.”

– Meanwhile, Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex announces, to Nicki and whomever else is listening, that he’s now “dedicated to tearing you down.” Oh, and Nicki’s on-and-off boyfriend/backup dancer tweets that he’s going to punch Rosenberg when he sees him.

– Enter Nas’s show where he brings out Lauryn Hill, who made Nicki Minaj even possible and those born around 1980 and before smile. Those born after ’80 were probably pouting because there were no “Starships” flying around, even though, apparently, they’re meant to and all.

So now what?

All of this chest thumping from Wayne and Nicki means Flex’s radio shift at 7pm EST should be interesting, if he actually decides to investigate and shame her on the air. New York natives know one another and few secrets stay that way for long, once someone starts asking questions. I listened to Hot 97 this morning but didn’t get to hear any of the morning show, have they begun banning Nicki’s records yet? Or will Hot 97 just ban her actual person, like the station did with 50 Cent following that chair incident back in the early oughts? Will this be Nicki’s fate now? Would be a shame if a hometown hero can’t even perform on the biggest stage in her city.

All in all, I don’t think that was the best idea for Nicki. Rosenberg’s allowed to have an opinion and as much as I live for Nicki’s rhymes, “Starships” is an awful song. It’s not a hip-hop song and Minaj’s fans – of mixtapes like Beam Me Up Scotty, anyway – miss her turns at lyrics rather than Ke$ha attempts. But I guess this whole dust up of “Is Nicki Minaj too pop?” was coming down the pipe anyway. What do you folks think?

+ Here’s Flex shading Nicki Minaj as a “commercical rapper.”
