Vacay Hair: Seven Styles For Sand & Sun

You’ve finally mapped out your flights and hotel, your itinerary is solid and the crew is ready. Outfits are picked out, budgets are solid and you are ready to go.

Except that you have no idea what to do with your hair.

If washing-n-going doesn’t work for your texture and daily blowing, twisting, knotting, wrapping, pinning, etc doesn’t exactly sound like a vacation, here are some simple, relaxed and natural friendly tropical vacay hairstyles to consider that allow for more time doing what you are there do to—nothing. Because having to stop your beach marathon to “do your hair” isn’t what you paid for. All you need are the right tools, products and a little preparation up front.

1. Throw It Up and Scarf It (shown above)
Next to great conditioner, a good collection of scarves is truly your hair’s best friend in the summer. Just throw it up in a loose bun or pony or your free-flowing hair and wrap the scarf of your choice around it. And then go have fun.
Check out this video from The Chic Natural on a good technique and Aliphilly1 has a good video if you want the scarf look but are rocking box braids or twists.

2. Top Knot/Bun
This style works for all hair types, even braids and pretty much is a cinch to do one you get the hang of it. Big bun season is here, don’t deny it. Check out these videos to learn how to master your own, no matter if you’re twisted/braided, straight or curly.

3. Crown Braid
This is a tried and true “I have 10 minutes to figure out my hair our my friends are totally leaving me for dinner” style. It’s simple, chic and works if you have no time to fully dry your tresses. Try it yourself with this video by Carib Beauty.

4. Side Part Slick Bun
It’s no wonder why this style shows up on every runway every season. It’s perfect. It’s simple and it’s fast. Bold makeup, scarves, statement earrings, the next step is a fun one as this style only takes minutes to do. No tutorial needed, just a hard brush, smoothing gel, a rat-tail comb and scarf to set it down are all you need.

5. Braided/Twisted Updos
Pick your style and rock it. For shorter excursions (long weekends or one week) these are perfect for when you truly don’t want to think about your hair. Depending on your style, you can make variations with pinning, twisting and more. Or you can just let it be and enjoy the sun.

6. Marley/Havana Twists
I rocked a set of Marley Twists to last year’s Food Wine Rum Festival in Barbados and they were a lifesaver because I definitely was too busy to worry about my hair. Depending on your hair texture and length, you will have to vary the size of the braid but they are big, soft and don’t weigh a ton.

Link up with your nearest braiding salon or get Netflix ready and just do them yourself.

6. Two-Strand Twists

If adding extra hair a la Marley twists isn’t in your plans, twisting your own natural hair is a great alternative. Rock them for as long as you want, and then take them our for a more voluminous look with texture towards the end of your stay.
